Duration: 4 Hours

Course Details

CPPFES2005 – Demonstrate first attack firefighting equipment covers the correct selection and use of first attack firefighting equipment in the event of a small, contained fire. It is designed to help workers respond quickly and safely to incipient-stage fire incidents before emergency services arrive, in accordance with AS 3745 and workplace emergency procedures.

Key topics include:

  • Fire awareness and emergency response procedures:
Understand basic fire science, including how fires start, spread, and can be controlled using appropriate equipment.
  • Types of first attack firefighting equipment:
Learn to identify and use different types of portable fire extinguishers (e.g. water, foam, dry chemical, CO₂), fire blankets, and hose reels.
  • Equipment selection and limitations:
Select the correct equipment for different classes of fire and understand the risks and limitations of each device.
  • Practical fire suppression techniques:
Gain hands-on experience discharging fire extinguishers and applying safe firefighting techniques in a controlled environment.
  • Safety protocols and emergency procedures:
Apply evacuation protocols, use of alarms, and safe approach techniques to minimise personal and site risk during a fire emergency.

Assessment includes a written knowledge check and practical demonstration of firefighting equipment use, in line with nationally recognised training standards.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment Requirement

To ensure prospective students have the necessary LLN skills to successfully undertake their chosen training, it is a mandatory requirement to complete an LLN assessment prior to booking confirmation.

Training Outcome

Upon successful completion of the CPPFES2005 – Demonstrate first attack firefighting equipment course, participants will achieve a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment issued by KI Training and Assessing.

Participants will receive:

  • A digital copy of the Statement of Attainment, which will be emailed to them either on the day of course completion or the following business day.

This training meets fire safety standards for workplaces across Australia and is commonly required on construction sites, industrial facilities, shutdowns, and other high-risk environments where workers may need to respond to small fires as part of emergency procedures.

Prerequisites & Course Requirements

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): To enter our workshop, participants are required to wear steel-capped boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts.

Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements: Participants must be able to read, write and understand English. Completion of the LLN assessment is required prior to booking confirmation.

Age Requirement: Persons must be 18 years of age or older.

Individuals holding a Student Visa are not eligible to enrol in or attend the course as KITA is not a registered CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students).

Career Opportunities

This unit supports employment across a wide range of industries where basic fire response capability is part of site safety requirements. While it does not qualify participants as professional firefighters, it enhances job readiness and safety compliance for roles such as:

  • Construction and shutdown workers
  • Warehouse and logistics staff
  • Facility and building maintenance personnel
  • Mining and resources workers
  • Education and childcare staff
  • Hospitality, retail, and front-line service workers

Having this competency is often required for site inductions, emergency warden roles, and first response teams, and it’s a valuable addition to any role involving high-risk tasks, public safety responsibilities, or confined space entry.

Workplace Implementation

This unit supports compliance with WHS legislation, emergency management plans, and AS 3745 – Planning for emergencies in facilities, by ensuring workers can respond appropriately to small, containable fires using portable firefighting equipment.

Workers trained in CPPFES2005 are equipped to:

  • Identify and select the correct extinguisher or fire blanket for different fire types
  • Operate extinguishers, hose reels, and fire blankets safely and effectively
  • Follow emergency procedures including evacuation and alert protocols
  • Reduce the risk of fire escalation before emergency services arrive
  • Support workplace fire drills, safety inductions, and emergency response planning

This training is widely adopted in construction, warehousing, shutdown, education, and public facilities, and is often part of standard site induction or fire warden responsibilities. Regular refresher training is recommended to maintain site-readiness and competency.
