Course Overview
This combined course includes two nationally recognised units:
RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces
MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres
It is designed for workers who need to enter and work in confined spaces and test atmospheric conditions using a gas detector, often required in high-risk industries like mining, construction, water utilities, shutdowns, and mechanical services.
Training is delivered face-to-face at our Belmont or Naval Base facility, or onsite for suitable employer groups across WA. The course covers confined space access procedures, permits, PPE, emergency protocols, and gas monitoring, ensuring participants meet site compliance requirements and WHS legislation.

Training Outcome
Upon successful completion participants will achieve a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment issued by KI Training and Assessing for:
RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces
MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres
Participants will receive:
- A digital copy of the Statement of Attainment, which will be emailed to them either on the day of course completion or the following business day.
This combined course meets entry requirements for many shutdown, utility, construction, and infrastructure roles where workers are required to test and monitor atmospheres before and during confined space entry.
Most employers require this combination of units to meet permit-to-work and WHS obligations for enclosed or restricted work environments.
Prerequisites & Course Requirements
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): To enter our workshop, participants are required to wear steel-capped boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Hardhats can be provided if you can not bring your own.
Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements: Participants must be able to read, write and understand English. Completion of the LLN assessment is required prior to booking.
Age Requirement: Persons must be 18 years of age or older.
Individuals holding a Student Visa are not eligible to enrol in or attend the course as KITA is not a registered CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students).
