This combined course meets entry requirements for many shutdown, utility, construction, and infrastructure roles where workers are required to test and monitor atmospheres before and during confined space entry.

Most employers require this combination of units to meet permit-to-work and WHS obligations for enclosed or restricted work environments.

Prerequisites & Course Requirements

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): To enter our workshop, participants are required to wear steel-capped boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Hardhats can be provided if you can not bring your own.

Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements: Participants must be able to read, write and understand English. Completion of the LLN assessment is required prior to booking.

Age Requirement: Persons must be 18 years of age or older.

Career Opportunities

This course supports workers in:

  • Shutdown and maintenance crews
  • Mining and resource sector workers
  • Utility and wastewater operations
  • Civil construction and trenching crews
  • Mechanical, electrical and HVAC teams
  • Confined space standby or entry personnel

Many worksites require both units for compliance with permit-to-work systems and safe work procedures in confined environments.

Workplace Implementation

Once certified, you will be able to:

  • Identify and assess confined spaces
  • Test atmospheres before and during entry using gas detection equipment
  • Work safely within the confined space while monitoring gas levels
  • Respond appropriately to alarms and atmospheric risks
  • Follow rescue and emergency procedures where required
  • Comply with AS 2865 – Confined Spaces and relevant WHS Codes of Practice

This training helps reduce risks associated with oxygen deficiency, toxic gases, and flammable atmospheres, while ensuring legal compliance on high-risk sites.
