RIIWHS202E - Enter and work in confined spaces

Course Overview

The RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces (Refresher) course is designed for experienced workers who need to renew their confined space competency without completing full training. This assessment-only pathway confirms that you can continue to safely enter, work in, and exit confined spaces in accordance with WHS regulations and site requirements.

Confined space work carries significant risks, including atmospheric hazards, restricted movement, and engulfment. This refresher ensures workers can still correctly follow permit procedures, use gas detection equipment, and wear appropriate PPE.

Assessment is conducted face-to-face at our Belmont or Naval Base training facility, or onsite for group bookings using compliant confined space entry equipment. This pathway is commonly required for workers in construction, shutdowns, energy, mining, utilities, and maintenance roles.

Note: This refresher is recommended for workers who completed the full course within the past 2–5 years and have maintained relevant on-site experience. If it’s been longer or you’re unsure of your current competency, we recommend enrolling in the full course.

Course Details

This refresher course includes the nationally recognised unit of competency:

RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces

Designed for experienced workers, this assessment-only pathway confirms your continued ability to enter, work in, and exit confined spaces safely. It is ideal for those who have completed the full training within the last 2–5 years and need to maintain compliance for site access or permit-to-work systems.

You will be assessed on your ability to:

  • Identify confined space entry requirements and site-specific hazards
  • Follow confined space entry permits and risk control procedures
  • Select, inspect, and use appropriate PPE and safety equipment
  • Operate gas testing equipment to monitor atmospheric conditions
  • Enter, work in, and exit a confined space safely and efficiently
  • Maintain communication and apply emergency response procedures
  • Comply with workplace policies and WHS requirements throughout the task

Assessment includes both a written knowledge test and a practical confined space entry assessment using compliant equipment and procedures.

Note: If your prior training was completed more than 5 years ago, or you’re unfamiliar with current site protocols and equipment, we recommend completing the full training course instead.

Training Outcome

Upon successful completion of the refresher assessment of RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in confined spaces, participants will achieve a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment issued by KI Training and Assessing.

Participants will receive:

    • A digital copy of the Statement of Attainment, which will be emailed to them either on the day of course completion or the following business day.

This unit is a mandatory requirement on many high-risk worksites—particularly where workers enter tanks, pits, vessels, shafts, or below-ground services. The refresher pathway supports continued compliance with WHS regulations and is commonly required every 2 years, or as specified by your employer, site procedures, or permit-to-work systems.

Prerequisites & Course Requirements

To enrol in the refresher (assessment-only) version of this course, participants must:

  • Have previously completed RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in confined spaces
  • Be able to provide evidence of completing the full course within the past 2–5 years
  • Have recent and relevant work experience performing tasks in confined space

If you are unable to meet these criteria, we recommend enrolling in the full training course to refresh your knowledge and practical skills.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): To enter our workshop, participants are required to wear steel-capped boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Hardhats can be provided if you can not bring your own.

Age Requirement: Persons must be 18 years of age or older.

Career Opportunities

Completing the refresher assessment helps you maintain the confined space competency required for ongoing work in high-risk environments. It is essential for roles where workers enter enclosed or partially enclosed spaces with limited access or potentially hazardous conditions.

This unit is commonly required for:

  • Construction and civil infrastructure workers
  • Shutdown and maintenance personnel
  • Utility and service technicians (e.g. water, sewer, power)
  • Mining and resources operators
  • Industrial cleaning and tank entry workers
  • Mechanical and fabrication trades working in confined environments

Employers and site managers often require confined space refresher training as part of site access, permit-to-work approvals, and WHS compliance—especially for FIFO, shutdown, and confined-entry projects across Western Australia.

Workplace Implementation

Refresher training in RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces ensures workers maintain current competency in line with WHS legislation, industry codes of practice, and site-specific permit-to-work systems.

Workers assessed as competent through this refresher are able to:

  • Identify confined space hazards and apply appropriate control measures
  • Follow permit procedures and entry/exit protocols
  • Use PPE, harnesses, and gas monitoring equipment correctly
  • Communicate effectively during confined space operations
  • Respond to emergencies and follow site rescue plans

Regular refresher training—typically required every 2 years—helps reduce the risk of confined space incidents, supports compliance during audits, and ensures your workforce remains safe, prepared, and site-ready. This is especially important in shutdowns, construction, utilities, and industrial maintenance environments.
