The MSMSS00019 – Operate a drain cleaning system skill set is designed for workers who operate high pressure drain cleaning equipment as part of routine maintenance, blockage removal, or shutdown work across plumbing, civil, construction, and industrial sectors.
This nationally recognised skill set provides the essential safety, permit, and operational competencies to safely perform Class B drain cleaning tasks, including operating water jetting systems in sewer lines, pits, pipes, and confined spaces.
Training is delivered face-to-face at our Belmont facility by qualified trainers and includes both theory and hands-on operation of compliant drain cleaning equipment in a simulated worksite environment.

This skill set includes the following four nationally recognised units of competency:
MSMPER200 – Work in accordance with an issued permit
MSMWHS110 – Follow emergency response procedures
MSMWHS200 – Work safely
MSMWJ303 – Operate a drain cleaning system
This course equips participants to:
- Set up, operate, and shut down high pressure drain cleaning equipment.
- Identify and manage the risks associated with water jetting and confined work areas.
- Use PPE, signage, exclusion zones, and safe work practices.
- Comply with work permits and WHS procedures during drain cleaning operations.
- Communicate and work effectively as part of a team.
The course follows AS/NZS 4233.1:2013 guidelines and industry best practice.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment Requirement
To ensure prospective students have the necessary LLN skills to successfully undertake their chosen training, it is a mandatory requirement to complete an LLN assessment prior to booking confirmation.

Training Outcome
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for:
- MSMPER200 – Work in accordance with an issued permit
- MSMWHS110 – Follow emergency response procedures
- MSMWHS200 – Work safely
- MSMWJ303 – Operate a drain cleaning system
Certification is issued by KI Training and Assessing (RTO 52593) and qualifies participants to safely operate drain cleaning systems within Class B pressure limits in accordance with Australian standards and WHS legislation.
Prerequisites & Course Requirements
Physical Requirements: You must be physically capable of operating heavy hoses, standing for extended periods, and wearing full-body PPE.
PPE Requirements: You must wear steel-capped boots, long pants, and a long-sleeve shirt. We supply all other safety gear including gloves, face shields, and protective overalls.
Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements: Participants must be able to read, write and understand English. Completion of the LLN assessment is required prior to booking confirmation.
Minimum Age: 18 years (recommended minimum due to high-risk equipment).
Individuals holding a Student Visa are not eligible to enrol in or attend the course as KITA is not a registered CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students).

The CTF provides funding support for training of eligible workers in the construction industry. We acknowledge the support of the CTF in reducing the costs of training for eligible workers.
