MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres
- In-person
- On-site
Course Overview
The MSMWHS217 – Gas test atmospheres unit provides the skills and knowledge required to safely test and monitor potentially hazardous atmospheres in the workplace. This is a core requirement for workers operating in confined spaces, enclosed areas, or where there is a risk of exposure to gases, vapours or lack of oxygen.
This nationally recognised training is essential for a wide range of industries across Western Australia, including mining, oil and gas, construction, utilities, and shutdowns. It is commonly completed alongside confined space entry training and used as part of site-specific induction requirements.
Training is delivered face-to-face at our Belmont or Naval Base facility and includes hands-on experience using gas detectors, atmospheric monitors and real-world safety procedures aligned with current WHS standards.

This course covers the full requirements of the nationally recognised unit of competency:
MSMWHS217 – Gas test atmospheres
You will learn how to:
- Identify hazardous atmospheres (flammable gases, oxygen deficiency, toxic vapours).
- Select and use appropriate gas detection equipment.
- Conduct atmospheric testing before and during work.
- Interpret gas readings and apply relevant safety actions.
- Complete safety documentation and follow permit-to-work procedures.
- Respond to unsafe readings and communicate with work teams.
All training and assessment is delivered by qualified trainers using industry-standard gas monitoring devices. Assessment includes a written component and practical testing using portable gas detection equipment.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment Requirement
To ensure prospective students have the necessary LLN skills to successfully undertake their chosen training, it is a mandatory requirement to complete an LLN assessment prior to booking confirmation.

Additional information
This training is essential for:
- Confined space entry workers.
- Shutdown and maintenance crews.
- Tank and vessel cleaners.
- Oil and gas field operators.
- Civil construction workers near utilities or sewers.
- Supervisors or spotters supporting permit-to-work systems.
Many high-risk work environments require gas testing to be performed before any work can begin, especially in low-oxygen or flammable environments.
Once certified, you will be able to:
- Conduct atmospheric testing using calibrated portable gas monitors.
- Record readings and take action where unsafe levels are identified.
- Work safely under permit conditions and confined space procedures.
- Contribute to team-based hazard control strategies.
