The RIICCM202E – Identify, locate and protect underground services unit equips workers with the skills and knowledge required to safely identify and avoid underground utilities before starting excavation, trenching or ground-penetrating work.
This nationally recognised course is essential for workers in civil construction, plumbing, electrical, communications, and maintenance—especially where digging or drilling near live services presents a serious safety risk.
Training is delivered face-to-face at our Belmont training centre or can be arranged on-site for teams. The course covers locating methods, Dial Before You Dig processes, service plans, and protective procedures.

This course includes the following nationally recognised unit of competency:
RIICCM202E – Identify, locate and protect underground services
Participants will learn to:
- Interpret utility plans, symbols, and colour coding.
- Use recognised safe digging methods.
- Identify types of underground services (electrical, gas, water, comms).
- Use locating tools and electronic detection systems (where applicable).
- Follow Dial Before You Dig procedures and local regulations.
- Apply protection measures during excavation or construction.
- Communicate hazards and markings clearly with the work team.
Training includes a mix of theory and practical application based on real job site scenarios.
Assessment includes a written knowledge component and practical demonstrations.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment Requirement
To ensure prospective students have the necessary LLN skills to successfully undertake their chosen training, it is a mandatory requirement to complete an LLN assessment prior to booking confirmation.

Training Outcome
Upon successful completion of the RIICCM202E – Identify, locate and protect underground services course, participants will achieve a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment issued by KI Training and Assessing.
Participants will receive:
- A digital copy of the Statement of Attainment, which will be emailed to them either on the day of course completion or the following business day.
This unit is a common requirement on civil construction, mining, and infrastructure projects, and forms part of multiple qualifications in the construction and resources industries.
Prerequisites & Course Requirements
There are no formal pre-requisites for this training.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): To enter our workshop, participants are required to wear steel-capped boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Hardhats can be provided if you can not bring your own.
Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements: Participants must be able to read, write and understand English. Completion of the LLN assessment is required prior to confirmation of the booking.
Minimum Age: 18 years (recommended minimum due to physical requirements).
Individuals holding a Student Visa are not eligible to enrol in or attend the course as KITA is not a registered CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students).
