Course Overview
The RIIHAN301E – Operate elevating work platform unit provides workers with the skills and knowledge to safely operate non-boom type elevating work platforms (EWPs), such as scissor lifts or vertical lifts. This nationally recognised unit is required for those working at height using mobile platforms where a High Risk Work Licence is not required.
This course is suitable for workers in construction, maintenance, manufacturing, and warehousing, and meets duty of care requirements under WA workplace health and safety legislation.
Training is delivered face-to-face at our Belmont training facility, with both classroom theory and practical assessment on compliant EWP equipment.
If you require training on a boom-type EWP with a reach of 11 metres or more, you will need to complete the WorkSafe WA High Risk Work Licence class WP.

This course includes the nationally recognised unit of competency:
RIIHAN301E – Operate elevating work platform
You will learn to:
- Conduct pre-start checks and safety inspections.
- Assess the work environment and plan EWP use.
- Operate EWP equipment (e.g. scissor lifts or vertical lifts) safely.
- Navigate hazards, obstacles, and overhead obstructions.
- Maintain stability and use fall protection equipment appropriately.
- Shut down and secure equipment safely after use.
- Follow site procedures and manufacturer’s guidelines.
Assessment includes a written knowledge component and practical demonstration on approved elevating work platforms.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment Requirement
To ensure prospective students have the necessary LLN skills to successfully undertake their chosen training, it is a mandatory requirement to complete an LLN assessment prior to booking confirmation.

Training Outcome
Upon successful completion of the RIIHAN301E – Operate elevating work platform course, participants will achieve a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment issued by KI Training and Assessing.
Participants will receive:
- A digital copy of the Statement of Attainment, which will be emailed to them either on the day of course completion or the following business day.
This unit confirms your competency to operate non-boom EWPs in accordance with workplace WHS policies and national standards.
For EWP operations over 11m boom length, a High Risk Work Licence (WP class) is required and delivered separately.
Prerequisites & Course Requirements
There are no formal pre-requisites for this training.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): To enter our workshop, participants are required to wear steel-capped boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Hardhats can be provided if you can not bring your own.
Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements: Participants must possess adequate LLN skills to interpret safety procedures and documentation. Completion of the LLN assessment is required prior to confirmation of the booking.
Physical Requirements: You must be physically fit to operate machinery, wear fall protection equipment, and complete practical activities at height.
Minimum Age: 18 years and over

This unit supports employment across:
