The RIISAM203E – Use hand and power tools unit provides workers with the knowledge and practical skills to safely select, use, and maintain hand and power tools in the workplace.
This nationally recognised unit is suitable for workers in construction, civil, mining, manufacturing, and mechanical trades who need to demonstrate competency using a range of commonly used tools—such as grinders, drills, hammers, impact drivers, and cutting tools.
Training is delivered face-to-face at our Belmont training facility or can be arranged onsite for employer groups across WA. It includes a balance of safety procedures, tool identification, and practical operation in a controlled, hands-on environment.

Course Details
This course includes the following nationally recognised unit of competency:
RIISAM203E – Use hand and power tools
You will learn how to:
- Identify different types of hand and power tools and their correct use.
- Inspect tools before and after use.
- Operate tools in accordance with manufacturer instructions and site policies.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly.
- Apply risk controls to reduce injury, noise, vibration and dust exposure.
- Maintain and store tools to ensure longevity and safety.
- Report hazards, faults or unsafe tools.
Assessment includes both a written knowledge test and practical assessment, with participants required to safely use a variety of tools on-site or at our training centre.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment Requirement
To ensure prospective students have the necessary LLN skills to successfully undertake their chosen training, it is a mandatory requirement to complete an LLN assessment prior to booking confirmation.

Training Outcome
Upon successful completion of the RIISAM203E – Use hand and power tools course, participants will achieve a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment issued by KI Training and Assessing.
Participants will receive:

- A digital copy of the Statement of Attainment, which will be emailed to them either on the day of course completion or the following business day.
This unit is often required as part of construction and resources qualifications or apprenticeship pathways.
Prerequisites & Course Requirements
There are no formal pre-requisites for this training.
No prior experience is necessary—this course is suitable for new entrants or workers needing formal recognition of existing skills.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): To enter our workshop, participants are required to wear steel-capped boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Eye and hearing protection provided during training.
Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements: Participants must possess adequate LLN skills to interpret safety procedures and documentation. Completion of the LLN assessment is required prior to confirmation of the booking.
Minimum Age: 18 years of age or older
